REMIX AND DECAY OF THE MOVING IMAGE / REMIX ET DÉTERIORATION DE L'IMAGE EN MOUVEMENT

Progamme éducatif à Montréal

The use of found footage, as well as techniques of sampling, collage and remixing have been ever-present in experimental filmmaking, although applications vary according to medium. These practices are reminiscent of the various methods of degrading images using a range of techniques from chemical processes on film stock to digital degradation through codec conversions. They are the result of the same artistic intent, the same desire to formally rework the medium to bring new meaning to the images. Over the course of two evenings, participants will discover these practices through screenings and discussions.

Goal: Participants will acquire a better understanding of the history of remix and decay in experimental filmmaking practices.

Instructor: Guillaume Vallée

Graduated from Concordia University with a Major in Film Animation and a MFA in Studio Arts - Film Production option, Guillaume Vallée is interested in radical forms of animation and analogue techniques as a way of considering the direct interaction between different mediums. His work is an exploration of materiality within the creative process. In attempts of creating a more complex relationship with his subject matter, Vallée makes use of cross-medium forms that range from camera-less techniques to optical effects and found-footage, often resulting in surreal and chaotic imagery. Vallée is now exploring the possibilites of magnetic video tape and creates film/video hybrid and performative work based on the materiality of these analogue supports. His work has been shown internationally in film and video festivals, galleries and concert venues.  As a member of Montreal's artists collective Groop Index,  he's activly involved in events organization that bring forward the idea of hybridity, acting as performer, installation artist and experimental film & video director.  Guillaume Vallée's doing a PhD- Études et Pratiques des Arts at UQAM.
